The meeting presented a summary analysis of the Italian experience and good European practices. Officials from the National Police General Directorate, the Sofia Metropolitan and the Regional Directorates of Interior, the Sofia Regional Inspection for Environment and Water, the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office and the National Investigation Service took part in the meeting. Representatives of the Italian Carabinieri Corps were guest speakers. The event took place after a series of trainings conducted as part of a project to strengthen the capacity of the police to counter illegal waste trafficking, funded by the Internal Security Fund. Senior Commissioner Borislav Muerov, Deputy Director of the National Police General Directorate, expressed hope that the online trainings will provide a practical basis to support the daily activities of employees of the Ministry of Interior in countering environmental crime.
The Project "Strengthening the capacity of the police to counter illegal waste trafficking" is funded by the Internal Security Fund. Its main purpose is to study foreign experience, which will serve as a basis for the preparation of information brochures with instructions and rules for combating this type of crime, in particular illegal waste trafficking.
